The Dallas Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was challenged to select a product for their 250,000 sf renovation that would comply with all GSA requirements issued in Executive Order 13514 for carpet sustainable properties, content and durability. A few of these included a minimum 30% recycled content, moderate to severe TARR classifications and ANSI/NSF 140 certification- at the Gold level (minimum).
The Tandus Centiva carpet selected for the project met or exceeded requirements in each category. Street Life with ER3 Modular backing contains 56.8% recycled content, has a 3.8 severe traffic classification and ANSI/NSF 140 Platinum certification. In addition, a mandate outlined in the Executive Order is the reclamation of the existing carpet. Tandus Centiva is uniquely positioned to support this requirement through our Restart® Program. For this project, flooring contractor Carpet Services removed 192,866 lbs of postconsumer carpet which was reclaimed and recycled by Tandus Centiva.
The Tandus Centiva Environmental Center in Dalton, Georgia is the industry’s first third-party certified reclamation center that employs a closed-loop system. The reclamation program enabled the Dallas EPA to include all postconsumer take-back carpet waste into the manufacturing of new recycled content floorcoverings.
The Dallas EPA is located in Fountain Place, a LEED Gold building certified under LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v3 - LEED 2009.
